Sitting at a cool $1.75 million, the SLR Stirling Moss for sale on the duPont REGISTRY web site is the only such car we have ever seen for sale inside the United States. As the description states, it is a 2010 model that has never been registered. It looks to be in pristine condition with only 50 miles on the odometer. The Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss was offered in a limited production run of 75 units with an original asking price of 750,000 Euros or approximately $1,000,000-plus at the current exchange rate. As the description also states, the car comes with a “showcar license” in order to be allowed for U.S. consumption.
Too good to be true? We had our concerns. The car is being sold under the name Michael Axtmann, an Internet entrepreneur from Germany who was once engaged to Tara Reid. The car has a Miami, Florida, address and Axtmann reportedly has homes in both Monaco and Miami. He is also rumored to own a SLR along with an assortment of Ferraris and Rolls-Royce cars. The number provided looked fake, with a country code located in the area code parenthesis. We decided to send an e-mail and heard back from a man claiming to be Michael Axtmann.
He told us the car is real and currently located in his garage in Germany. He included his German phone number in the classified ad although he may change that to a U.S. number very shortly. He has DOT-approved paperwork and was going to send the car to the U.S. once a buyer turned up. He now believes he will send the car stateside at the end of February, although he has some reservations about its ability to sell it stateside.
